The best on Kaua'i is the land itself. After a very short time you will know why. The island offers an emerald green plant world which is overgrown with mango and guava trees. It is the most unpopulated of the main islands and their people represent the quintessence of friendliness. If you are looking for action, every square meter on this 5 mio. years old sleeping volcano will offer its potential to do so. This is definitely a travelers dream. When you visit Kaua'i you do not want to leave!
Kaua'i has an international Airport in Lihue. So either you fly directly from your origin Airport to Lihue, Kaua'i or from the other islands to Lihue.
It is recommended to rent a car on Kaua'i as most activities and sightseeing spots are in rural areas. There are also bus routes on Kaua'i where you can travel very cheap (surfboards are not allowed/you can use the bike rack for your bycicle).
I recommend to stay somewhere on the west cost. North or south is also fine.
You can loose yourself looking at Waimea Canyon. So many different colors and shades will make you daydream. It is a very special and mystical place. You will feel the energy when you are standing there!
If you like an easy hike with a incredible reward at the end you should walk the Awa'awapuhi trail at the Waimea Canyon. You will walk through shaded areas through the woods. As you get lower and lower you will find an opening where the view will take your breath away. Probably you will be the only one there. So enjoy the sound of the birds while enjoying the endless view.
After the hike you might be a little tired. The Pu'u Kila Lookout is accessible by car. Take something to drink and be ready for a new epic profile pic! This landscape is unique to the world!
On your way back from Waimea Canyon you can visit the Polihale State Park to watch an incredible sunset at on of the most beautiful beaches I have been. Take something refreshing to drink and some snacks with you to enjoy it to the fullest.
Wailua Falls is an easy accessible waterfall which is about 25m high. If you get there early morning you might be lucky and spot a rainbow at the falls. You might end up crashing into a film crew which is making a movie. Make sure you stop by.
"A waterfall a day keeps the doctor away". This one is for the lazy days. You can drive there by car and enjoy the view.
When you cross the road you will get to this lookout overlooking the Wailua River.
Get on a self guided canoe tour and explore the wailua river. There is a hidden waterfall to explore!
The scenery is great and the canoe tour with your best friends will be something you will never forget. On the way you will find an incredible waterfall where you can go for a swim and spots to do cliff jumping.
If you want a real adventure and are sporty enough you should hike to this waterfall. It is so off the beaten path that you will have to follow a river, jump over rocks and follow small paths through bamboo forests and tropical lush greens. An adventure you will remember and a story you can tell a thousand times! Promise!
Ovelooking Kapa'a and the great coral reefs makes you feel little. You will appreciate a lot of small things in life. Happiness is a state of mind which you cannot buy. I feel happy when I experience things like that. Those moments where you take time to hear inside you. Enjoy the view and the silence on top.
Surrounded by mountains sitting at a half moon sandy bay this place is as magical as it gets. Thinking about living there and wake up to the sound of tropical birds singing and greeting the morning light fulfills your heart with joy. One of the most isolated places and thus so friendly and beautiful. Perhaps precisely because of that.
...and because Hanalei is still on my mind I will show you some more pics ;-)
Kauai has incredible places to go for a swim. Queens Bath is one of those locations you won´t find anywhere else. These natural rock pools will add a highlight to your trip. Just be careful as this place can be dangerous because of high waves washing you into the ocean.
It is so much fun to jump into those rock pools. Check how deep they are before you jump.
As you walk down towards the ocean the reef is already greeting you. The view is incredible and there are only a few spaces in the parking lot. So you have to be lucky to get a parking space. On the other hand this might be a reason why there are only a few people around. One of my favorite beaches on Kauai!
This beach is to good to be true. There are shaded areas, a volcanic rock formation on the right and the reef with crystal clear water right in front of you. You can easily fall asleep to the sound of the waves. This place will let you come down and relax.
If you are a photographer or like to take pictures this place will make it hard to put away your camera. Located on the north shore of Kaua'i it sits right next to the Napali cliffs. This scenery makes it very special.
Because of it´s beauty I will show you this beach from the top - drones did not exist at that time :-D
If you cannot leave you will end up like me. Seeing one of the most beautiful sunsets in my life! Actually the sky turned totally red setting the clouds on fire. I have never seen anything like this.
The boat ride with "Captain Andy´s" was incredible. On our way towards the Napali Coast we spotted dolphins in front of our boat. They stayed around for a while. Our guide knew some caves where we actually drove in with the boat. The landscape will take your breath away. You shouldn't miss that!
As we were anchoring at a Hawaiian indigenous site we were exploring the reef by snorkeling while the crew prepared the food for us.
The best comes always at the end. Hiking the Kalalau Trail was my favorite activity on Kauai. the 11-mile hike on the Napali Coast is so beautiful that there are no words which would correctly describe it. You will cross little water streams, walk through lush vegetation and openings with an incredible view on the cliffs. It is about 2 hours to get to the first beach - Hanakapi`ai Beach.
If you want to do the whole trek and tent there you should get a permit to do so. For more information visit www.kalalautrail.com
If you want to see a 125m high waterfall and you still have power left you can go another 2 miles (2h) upstream to see the Hanakapi'ai Falls. On the way you will walk through bamboo forests and you might smell guava. We could pick them from the tree and eat them right away. So delicious. Once you get to the waterfall you can reward yourself with a swim in the natural pool and a "shower" underneath the waterfall. Be careful of falling rocks.
Accommodation is not very cheap but the island will be definitely worth it. This is a dream which can come true. Do it while you are young. Otherwise you might not be able to or do not have the time anymore.
